Amazon holiday return policy 2026
Last checked:
Amazon usually stretches its return window for purchases made in November and December, so gifts bought early can still go back after the holidays. This page sets out what is known about the 2026 window, what Amazon's own pages say, and the exceptions that catch people out, including Amazon Haul.
The 2026 window (reported, not yet on Amazon's customer pages)
Seller-news sites reported in mid-October 2026 (for example PuppyIP on 2026-10-17) that an Amazon Seller Central notice extends the holiday return window for Amazon.com:
- Most items bought from 2026-11-01 through 2026-12-31 can be returned through 2027-01-31.
- Apple-branded products bought in that period: through 2027-01-15.
- The extension covers Amazon retail, Fulfilled by Amazon and seller-fulfilled orders. It changes the deadline only, not which items are returnable.
We have not read the Seller Central notice itself, and on 2026-10-18 Amazon's customer help pages and About Amazon had not yet posted 2026 holiday return dates. Treat these dates as reported until Amazon publishes them for customers. The "return by" date on your order in Your Orders is what applies. We will update this page when Amazon posts its customer notice.
The 2025 precedent (official)
About Amazon's 2025 holiday return page said most items bought between 2025-11-01 and 2025-12-31 could be returned until 2026-01-31, and Apple-branded products until 2026-01-15. The reported 2026 dates follow the same pattern, one year later.
The standard rules still apply
Amazon's return policy says most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery, in original or unused condition. The holiday extension moves the deadline; it does not make non-returnable items returnable. The policy lists exceptions, including:
| Window | Examples from Amazon's return policy |
|---|---|
| 7 days | Accidentally bought Kindle books that have not been read; some digital textbooks and music bought by mistake |
| 15 days | New Apple and Boost Infinite products; Amazon Haul items over 3 dollars |
| 90 days | Some Amazon Renewed products; most nonperishable baby products; mattresses (not crib mattresses) |
| Not returnable | Perishables, customized products, Amazon Pharmacy items, certain digital products, and items listed as Final Sale, including Haul items priced 3 dollars or less |
Amazon Haul and the holiday window
Amazon Haul has its own rules. Amazon Help says Haul returns close 15 days from delivery instead of the standard 30, and items priced 3 dollars or less are Final Sale. Neither Amazon's 2025 holiday return page nor the reported 2026 notice mentions Haul. So we cannot say whether Haul orders get the holiday extension. Check the "return by" date on each Haul order as soon as it arrives, and assume 15 days from delivery unless your order shows a later date.
That matters for gifts: a Haul item delivered on 2026-12-01 would, under the 15-day rule, have a window that closes around 2026-12-16, before most gifts are opened. Our guide to Haul for holiday gifts covers this in more detail.
Fees that can apply
- Late fee: if you do not drop off the item by the "return by" date, Amazon may charge 20% of the item price for the first 30 days after that date, and 100% after that.
- Damage fee: up to 50% of the item price when an item comes back damaged, missing parts or with obvious signs of use, for reasons not due to Amazon or the seller.
- Return shipping: most items have at least one free return option, but heavy or bulky items, a paid drop-off choice, or an unusually high return rate can mean a fee.
- Discounted purchases: returning an item that was part of a discount qualification reduces your refund.
Returning a gift you received
Amazon's return policy says a gift recipient can start a return on the Returns page with the 17-digit order number from the packing slip or digital gift receipt; ask the giver if you cannot find it. For an exchange, you return the gift and place a new order.
How long refunds take
Once Amazon issues a refund, the policy lists 2 to 3 hours for an Amazon gift card balance, 3 to 5 business days for a credit card, and up to 10 business days for a debit card. Amazon also says it can take up to 30 days to receive and process a return.
Items from third-party sellers
When a third-party seller ships its own stock, the return goes to that seller, not Amazon. Amazon's policy says such sellers must offer a U.S. return address, a prepaid return label, or a full refund without asking for the item back.
